Do you believe in God?

Posted on May 7th, 2007 by Angela : Spark of the Divine Fire Angela
For my whole life, Christian friends have considered me an atheist, and atheist friends have considered me one of those silly religious people. It's taken me decades to be comfortable where I am.

Which leads me to this question. Do you believe in God? A higher power? The Source of All? Your own higher self?

Folks tell me it isn't right to use the word "God" for the ideas I want to express about sacredness. But I figure it's time we reclaimed the word "God" from folks who think they've got "him" all figured out.

In my heart I know, I've always known, that God is more than a "person" we can define. If we are to take things like "infinite love" seriously, we have to discard lots of the definitions people have used to try to make sense of God since the beginning of written history. How could God become angry? How could God take sides in a conflict? How could God send people to Hell?

As it says in Conversations with God, "You've got Me all wrong."

To use a fluffy fuzzy term, I think ‘God’ could be best described as energy. This term suits both scientists and the enlightened, and I think they’re both right. The Chinese saw this, historically science/politics/philosophy were always considered as one in China. I see the ‘God’ in me, as no different from the ‘God’ in the tree, water or earth. In regards to finding God, the only answers are to be found from within (Best described in the Adam leaving the garden anaology). A search for God outside of oneself, will only lead to hard work and eventual failure. This resonates significantly with Taoism and other Eastern philosophies.

I don’t believe in sin (unlike Religous Taoism, Confucianism and all Abraham religions), and I don’t believe in heaven and hell. I consider the heaven idea analogues with retirement, where people delay joy now for something that may or may not happen in the future.

I certainly agree with you about god being energy. But I have to say that a lot of the scientific types I know really get their panties in a wad when people try to talk in terms of God-energy, vibration and quantum reality. They say that stuff has nothing to do with Physics. (I disagree.)

They’ve broken down the atom into all it’s little bits and pieces but there is still a massive investigation taking place to find the final link. The final nucleus of the atom, or the heart of the matter. This is very interesting to me.

I think scientists and philosophers are talking about the same thing. It’s only the ego of individuals and larger groups that prevent so many people finding common ground.

Dear Angela, thank you for sharing this, and I can definetly identify with this. I think no matter what you believe about God, it leads you to higher and higher, broader and broader, truer and truer understandings, if you really feel and approach God, whatever your concept of him, with sincerity. That you don't think God is a person, that makes sense to me, at this point in my understanding. Yet I am still trying to find the truths of who I am, and I think at that point, I will also understand who God is.

Best Wishes, Pooja
